GSM stands for grams per square meter — the weight of the fabric in a one-meter square. In a microfiber towel for car detailing, more grams means more fiber packed into the same area, and that drives the two things that matter most for your paint:
A higher GSM isn't automatically better — it's about matching density to the task. A plush 600 GSM microfiber towel is safest on paint but wrong for glass; a thin 220 GSM cloth is efficient for interiors and studio volume but too risky on fresh clear coat. The weave and the polyester/polyamide blend matter too: Work Stuff uses a 70/30 microfiber blend for better softness and absorbency than standard 80/20. What actually scratches car paint
Do microfiber towels scratch car paint? Not when they are clean, high-quality and used for the right task. Most swirl marks happen during drying or buffing — not the wash. These six mistakes cause most paint damage in home car care.
Make your microfiber

Maximum 40°C / 104°F wash temperature. Higher temperatures degrade microfiber structure and permanently reduce absorbency.
Wash separately from cotton. Lint from cotton fabrics transfers to microfiber and clogs the fibers, reducing performance.
No fabric softener, no bleach. Use mild fragrance-free detergent. Good Stuff Microfiber Wash is recommended.
Pre-wash all new towels before first use on your car to remove manufacturing residues and activate absorbency.
Air-dry whenever possible. If using a tumble dryer, low heat only — high heat melts synthetic fibers and ruins the cloth.
Never store damp. Moisture trapped in a closed bag causes mildew and permanent odor that no washing removes.
Separate by task. Once a cloth has been used on wheels or engine bay, it is not safe for car paintwork — even after washing.
Replace when performance drops. Frayed fibers or reduced absorbency after washing means the cloth has reached end of life.

For paintwork, wax and polish, 500–600 GSM is safest — the dense pile cushions grit away from the clear coat. The 600 GSM GENTLEMAN+ with laser-cut edges is the safest choice for car paint. For car glass use 400 GSM (ZEPHYR Waffle); for interiors and high-volume work, 220–320 GSM (Roll / Worker) dries faster and is easier to handle.
GSM (Grams per Square Meter) measures the density of a microfiber cloth. Higher GSM = more fiber = more absorbency and cushioning between the towel and your car's surface. For paintwork and wax removal, 500–600 GSM is safest. For car glass cleaning and interior detailing, 220–400 GSM works well and dries faster. A clean, high-quality microfiber towel used correctly will not scratch car paint.
